    Roger Kamien(Author)
Whether from a concert stage or in front of a classroom, Roger Kamien knows how to connect with an audience. It is his unique combination of a performer's musical sensibility and a teacher's understanding of what works with students that has made Music: An Appreciation the most widely-used text of its kind. The text's impeccable scholarship, clear presentation of musical elements and history, carefully chosen repertoire of musical selections, and insightful listening guides have been its hallmarks from the first edition. The revision adds a new text feature designed to help students connect their classroom experience to a wider listening world, and an exciting new online component.

Roger Kamien received his B.A. in Musicology from Columbia and his M.A. and PhD. from Princeton. Kamien taught for 2 years at Hunter College and for 20 years at Queens College, where he coordinated the music appreciation courses. In 1983, he was appointed to his current position. In addition to Music: An Appreciation, Prof. Kamien has written numerous articles and reviews, co-wrote A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony, and edited the Norton Scores. He is an accomplished pianist and, in recent years, has formed a two-piano team with his wife, Anita.

Review Text

I was dithering between three and four stars for this book. For beginners who know little about music I would give it four or even five stars; but for people who already know something about "classical" music, maybe three stars. For my part, I like it very much: sometimes a bit shallow, but fills in gaps for someone like me who loves music but who realises my own ignorance. (I now know what a "basso continuo" is and the "sonata form"!) I regret that it leaves out Elgar and Vaughan Williams. I certainly don't regret buying it (and the accompanying CDs of course). It is a long-term project for me - leisurely taking a year or so to go through all the sections. The explanatory text for the CD tracks is very good, easy to follow, very worth while I think.

I bought this book after briefly seeing another edition at a music appreciation group and whilst preparing a talk for the group. I was shocked at the price of a new copy and was very pleased to be able to purchase an older edition second hand, although without the CDs. As I have LPs or CDs of many of the works I am interested in studying, the CDs that go with the book might be useful but not essential. This is a serious and fairly in depth book meant to be a study aid for a course in music appreciation, and as such may not suit a newcomer to classical music - the Dorling Kindersley introduction to classical music might be a better (and more economical) purchase. I am well pleased with my purchase anyway.

For beginners to music this is a great book. Absolutely everything from the history through classical music styles onwards to modern music styles and world music, absolutely everything is covered. Unfortunately to pack all this information in 1 book only very general information is provided on each topic. But it is a good start, anyone who wants to delve deeper can continue onwards from the names / topics in the book.Lots of images and photos, always a plus in informative style books.

I had problems finding this book for my daughter, and I was glad to obtain it from Amazon as in Malta it was never heard of.
